CITY CHAMPIONSHIP: SYLMAR'S BURNEY SEES THE LIGHT IN TIME SYLMAR 14, GARDENA 3.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

Danny Burney couldn't get anything going. And he is the Sylmar offense.

The Spartans were scoreless in the fourth quarter, had managed just 58 total yards and were buried bur·y

Christian Medina and fullback Luis Jimenez pounded linebacker Marlon Pennington out of the way at the line and Burney raced 97 yards up the middle as the Spartans rallied for a 14-3 victory over visiting Gardena on Thursday in the first round of the City Championship playoffs.

``I just told my line to keep blocking and we'll get through this,'' Burney said. ``I saw (Pennington) swiped out of the play and that's when I knew I had a touchdown.''

The Spartans, who won their sixth in a row, had scored 52 and 56 points in easy victories to end the regular season. But they managed only two first downs in the first half and four for the game.

Burney's run accounted for more than half of Sylmar's 177 total yards. He finished with 117 yards on 13 carries.

``That was one of my big fears,'' coach Jeff Engilman said, ``that we would come out flat because the last two wins were so easy.''

But Sylmar's defense kept it in the game. The Spartans held Gardena to 117 total yards, the biggest contribution coming in the third quarter. Backed to their 1-yard line with 3rd-and-goal, the Spartans saw running back Jason Frankle drop the handoff Switching a cellular phone transmission from one cell to another as a mobile user moves into a new cellular area.
