CITY BUILDER IN HAMMER ATTACK HORROR; Thug leaves victim with fractured skull: Builder's racist hammer attack horror.

A COVENTRY builder is lucky to be alive after a thug fractured his skull with a lump hammer A lump hammer or club hammer is a heavy one-handed hammer with a double-faced head. It is useful for light demolition work, driving masonry nails, and for use with a steel chisel when cutting stone or metal.  during an unprovoked racist attack.

Ranbir Hayer has been told by doctors he could have been paralysed by the savage assault.

It happened while he was building a wall in the front garden of a home in Walsgrave.

The bricklayer was struck on the back of his head, dangerously close to his spine. He has been left with continuous headaches and was una- ble to feed himself in the days following the incident. The married 26-year-old was working on in Hall Lane with a colleague when two men walked by and shouted racist abuse. Moments later they returned and launched a sickening attack on the pair. During the attack, one of the men picked up the lump hammer Mr Hayer had been using. Mr Hayer said: "When hewas swinging the hammer at me, I kept stepping back. With the first swing he hit my finger and then he missed with the second. By this time I had my back against the wall we had built - I had nowhere to run."

The attacker smashed the 3lb hammer against Mr Hayer's skull, knocking him unconscious and leaving him with a fractured skull and severe bruising bruising

. The assault happened at 5.30pm on March 30 and the victimwas rushed to University Hospital, Walsgrave for treatment and the attackers fled from the scene. Mr Hayer said: "When you go out towork you don't expect someone is going to hit you with a lump hammer. "I'm a little bit scared now, I'mwatching out when I go out. "I'm having continuous headaches and for the first few days I couldn't sleep. One side of my head is bruised bruise

The self-employed brick layer has been unable to work since the attack and has had to cancel thousands of pounds worth of upcoming work as a result.
