CITY BOYS SECOND ROUND: FALKINSTEIN SAVES ECR : ECR 1 CHATSWORTH 0.

Byline: Brian Dalziel Daily News Staff Writer

Chatsworth High was hoping for penalty kicks, but El Camino Real's Yan Falkinstein wasn't going to let it get that far.

Falkinstein scored one minute into the final five-minute sudden-death overtime Thursday to lift the Conquistadores to a 1-0 victory over the visiting Chancellors in a City Championship boys' soccer second-round match.

It was the sophomore reserve striker's 10th goal this season and first in the postseason.

``I didn't want to go into penalty kicks,'' said Falkinstein, who played the entire second half and overtime period Noun 1. overtime period - a period of overtime play to resolve a tie; e.g. basketball

They've always been close. We had a couple of opportunities in the first half and even in the second half.

``But we really didn't create any openings in the middle and I don't think we worked hard enough.''

Falkinstein did.

The match-ending play was started by forward Jose Rivera-Otero, who took the ball down the left side. With a defender on his back, he was able to dribble down near the endline and fire a shot across the 6-yard box.

Chatsworth goalkeeper Sergio Zendejas dived to his left to make the save but couldn't hold on. Falkinstein was standing behind Zendejas on the far post and knocked in the loose ball with his right foot.

``I saw the cross coming over,'' Falkinstein said. ``I was expecting Jose to score, but I was ready for the rebound. It was a hard angle, but he usually makes those shots. But in a game like this you have to be ready for anything.

``Every time someone shoots it, you have to crash the net.''

Chatsworth, the No. 19 seed and unbeaten in its previous five matches, advanced to the second round by beating Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m).  on penalty kicks. ``I was definitely hoping to get to penalty kicks,'' he said. ``I think our chances (of winning) would have increased. But who's to say?

``I think we played with a lot of heart and desire. These guys have really shown a lot of maturity over the last month. I always tell the kids as long as you try your best, you have nothing to be ashamed about. But sometimes it doesn't go your way.''
