SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Though the FBI's list of the nation's safest cities ranks Santa Clarita No. 6, an analysis by the city based on the actual crime rate boosts it to the No. 3 spot.

The FBI list shows the number of crimes committed in 1999 in cities of 100,000 or more, but the city measured the number of crimes per 10,000 residents. Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  and Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  maintained their first- and second-place ranks.

Santa Clarita's crime rate is 176 per 10,000 people, behind Simi Valley with 145 per 10,000 and Thousand Oaks at 153 per 10,000.

Sunnyvale follows Santa Clarita with 199 and Daly City Daly City, city (1990 pop. 92,311), San Mateo co., W Calif., a suburb of San Francisco; inc. 1911. Daly City is primarily residential, its population having grown significantly since the 1970s.  is sixth on the list with 241.

Santa Clarita followed Sunnyvale and Daly City, both in the Bay Area, on the FBI list.

Santa Clarita had 2,673 major crimes reported last year, while 2,665 were reported in Sunnyvale and 2,526 in Daly City.

And although Santa Clarita has about 21,000 more people, Sunnyvale had eight fewer crimes reported.
