CITY 4-A : CARSON (4-6) AT TAFT (10-0) STRENGTHS.

Carson: The Colts intimidate in·tim·i·date

non-South Bay teams on name alone and that could help in the playoffs. TB Patrick McCall could be the best in the City and will team with FB Greg Merchant to move the offense. Despite a 4-6 record, this team was good enough to beat Kennedy and that could help in playing Kennedy's arch rival. The Colts have had the knack to play well when it's not expected. LB Jermaun Willis (6-2, 230) is outstanding. The Colts beat sixth-seeded Crenshaw cren·shaw   also cran·shaw

, which helped them make the 4-A playoffs, and a rigorous schedule has prepared them to play a tough team like Taft.

Taft:The Toreadors are potent offensively, averaging 38.8 points and 371 yards per game, led by likely All-City quarterback Nick DiPadova and receivers Damon Coleman, Ryan Long and Keith Johnson. The defense has held teams to 12 points per game and dominates with a heavy pass rush by fast defenders. Kennedy was the only team to move the ball against Taft and it still lost the game. The Toreadors are one of the quickest teams around and beat Dorsey by 36 points on the road. Dorsey beat Carson.

WEAKNESSES

Carson: The Colts' offense scored just 17 points per game. McCall is good but he's been mainly a one-man show, while Carson has relied on the blocking of a line that is not of typical Carson size. They will have to contend with Taft's quickness. The defense has not been consistent. Allowing 24 points a game is not good enough since the offense has struggled. Two of Carson's four victories were against teams with a combined record of 2-18.

Taft: The Toreadors have to a avoid a letdown letdown

but are still dangerous because of their skill players. If McCall can run through the Taft defense and the offense use ball control, they could have a chance. But with several bad losses, including 43-6 to No. 1 San Pedro, that doesn't appear likely.

Taft: Taft has to play a solid game to win and this could be their toughest game until the semifinals. A strong defensive performance along with a consistent mix of the run and pass should be enough. But Taft can't fall behind and expect a big comeback.

NARBONNE (6-4) AT SYLMAR (8-2)

STRENGTHS

Narbonne: The Gauchos are very deep in the skill positions with five top running backs. With two seasons of the Wing-T offense, Narbonne has been able to jump on teams early because the offense is so difficult to defend. Tight end Brandon Malemalauna is a Division I prospect who has speed along with 265 pounds of power. Narbonne is on a four-game winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins
streak, run - an unbroken series of events; "had a streak of bad luck"; "Nicklaus had a run of birdies"
, outscoring opponents 39-9 in that stretch. It could be a darkhorse to win the title after some early disciplinary problems and injuries.

Sylmar: The Spartans are playoff tough, meaning this could be the time the team plays its best football. Quarterback Chris Cervantes is a two-year starter and remembers the loss to Narbonne last year. The revenge factor also plays a part because Sylmar defeated Carson in a similar situation in 1994. Sylmar has one of the biggest offensive lines in the City and eventually it has been able to control the line of scrimmage line of scrimmage
n. pl. lines of scrimmage Football

and pull away in games. The Spartans have averaged 39 points in their last five games and have won seven straight.

WEAKNESSES

Narbonne: The Gauchos have played inconsistent in stretches, evidenced by a three-game losing streak in mid-season capped by an embarrassing 22-point loss to Washington. Narbonne's Wing-T offense might not be as effective since Sylmar coach Jeff Engilman has been studying last year's film. As potent as last year's offense was, only a kickoff return in the fourth quarter prevented a loss to Sylmar.

Sylmar: The Spartans showed their two sides last week against Canoga Park. They fell behind 14 points, stormed back with 29 points in less than a quarter, then barely held on in overtime. That will not work against Narbonne, which has experience in big games. Quarterback Cervantes has been shaky in big games in the past and tailback tail·back

KEY PLAYERS

Narbonne: QB Damiean Johnson, RB Barry Yarbough, TB Cameron Taylor, FB Austin Uku, TE Brandon Malemalauna.

Sylmar: QB Chris Cervantes, TB Donald Carpenter, WR Twayne Patterson, OL Ray Solis, LB Angel Guerrero.

OUTLOOK

Narbonne: This is not a 12th seed, but actually a top 5 seed peaking at the proper time. The Gauchos have won at Sylmar before and won't be intimidated in·tim·i·date

. However, they will need to do more than the Wing-T because Sylmar has studied that offense since the last game. The key could be the Narbonne passing game, which it features more than last season.

Sylmar: Well, the Spartans get a quick reality check and face a possible first round elimination. If the good Spartans show up, then Narbonne is in trouble because Sylmar will rise to the occasion. If not, this could be Jeff Engilman's last game. The key player for Sylmar is Cervantes.

STRENGTHS

Kennedy: The Cougars have one of the top passing attacks in the City with quarterback Calvin Zinck, who has passed for 2,017 yards and 23 touchdowns. The Cougars have also relied on the run, with Waking Bailey filling in for injured in·jure

Jaret Harris. The Cougars' three losses were by a combined 17 points and the defense has been improving as the season has progressed. This is not your normal 7-3 team. The Cougars are powerful on both sides of the ball and could be dangerous, especially against City Section defenses not accustomed to defending the pass.

Palisades: The Dolphins have a great deal of versatility on offense, with quarterback Kris Hawkes and tailback Ian Jeter. Palisades' defense has shut out two opponents and held powerful Westchester to a season-low eight points. Nose tackle Rodney Moses is an All-City candidate because of his ability to control the line of scrimmage. The Dolphins' two losses were by a combined 12 points.

WEAKNESSES

Kennedy: The Cougars will have to hope Bailey doesn't get winded playing tailback and safety. Kennedy has lost teams because it got behind early and Zinck was forced to pass against defenses waiting to pound receivers. Kennedy cannot fall behind early and hope for a big comeback. The Kennedy defense has allowed 199 points, most of any 4-A playoff team from the Valley. It would help if Zinck didn't have so much pressure to produce points and could let the running game dictate the tempo.

Palisades: Inconsistency has been a problem. The Dolphins played a great game against Westchester but barely beat University. The 8-2 record may be deceiving with three of those victories by 16 points. The Palisades offense hasn't clicked on all cylinders in many games, either depending on big plays or the defense. The defense will be tested against Kennedy's passing game.

KEY PLAYERS

Kennedy: QB Calvin Zinck, WR Aaron Lewis Aaron Lewis, (born April 13 1972 in Rutland, Vermont, U.S.), is the lead vocalist and acoustic guitarist of the hard rock group Staind. Background
Lewis grew up, largely, in Longmeadow, Massachusetts.
, RB Waking Bailey, LB Tommy Gales, LB Byron Williams.

Palisades: QB Kris Hawkes, WR Travon Waller, LB Marlon Usher, DB Melvin Hayes.

OUTLOOK

Kennedy: It's an advantageous first-round game for Kennedy. It must must stick to the game plan of pass first and run second. If Zinck gets hot and Bailey runs effectively, the Cougars will be difficult to handle. The defense must contain Palisades' weapon and not get behind early.

Palisades: The Dolphins will have to play a complete game and not expose those weakness that allowed University, Venice and Hamilton to play them tough. It's difficult to determine how Palisades will react to the 4-A because it's been so long since its last appearance. The home crowd should help.

EL CAMINO REAL (7-3) VS. SAN PEDRO (10-0)

at Daniels Field

STRENGTHS

El Camino Real: The Conquistadores are a strong defensive team. They held the City's top two offensive units - Kennedy and Taft - to a combined 41 points. El Camino Real has played a tough schedule, with a win over Chaminade. Their offense is tricky because Aaron Fredette likes to run the option, a rarity among quarterbacks. Tailback Quincy Wright Philip Quincy Wright (28 December 1890 – 17 October 1970) was an American political scientist known for his pioneering work and expertise in international law and international relations.  is a potential game breaker breaker: see wave, in oceanography.  and a decent passing game will keep defenses honest.

also makes the Pirates difficult to stop. The defense has allowed just 6.7 points per game and a high of 21 against Dorsey.

WEAKNESSES

El Camino Real: While there's a great defense, the Conquistadores have struggled offensively in some stretches, including 13 points against Chatsworth and 14 against Birmingham. Wright has the tendency to disappear from games when because he doesn't get enough carries. A team that isn't explosive offensively might have to rely too much on defense. El Camino Real's defense has come through most of the season.

San Pedro: Coach Mike Walsh Mike Walsh is a common name that could refer to:
  • Mike Walsh (TV host), host of the Australian television program The Mike Walsh Show.
  • Mike Walsh (UP), executive for Union Pacific Railroad named Railroader of the Year for 1991 by Railway Age magazine.
couldn't think of any glaring weaknesses. The only sticking point might be a letdown. San Pedro played two tough games, a two-point win over Narbonne and an eight-point win over Crenshaw, both tough defensive teams like El Camino Real. San Pedro was in a similar situation last season and was nearly beaten in the first round by Westchester.

KEY PLAYERS

El Camino Real: QB Aaron Fredette, TB Quincy Wright, WR Ade Jimoh Adebola "Ade" Jimoh (born April 18, 1980 in Los Angeles, California) is an American football cornerback who currently plays for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League. He was originally signed by the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent in 2003. , DB Jared Maiden, OT Greg Hulett, LB Eduardo Delgado.

San Pedro: QB Melvin Yarborough, RB Jeff Williams, DB Anthony Banks, S Jomar Butler, DL Travis White.

OUTLOOK

El Camino Real: It will take a perfect game for the Conquistadores to have a chance. But this is not a 16th-seeded team and El Camino Real has played the likes of Kennedy, Taft and Chaminade, so San Pedro shouldn't be overwhelming. Fredette will have to run the offense smoothly, score points early and put pressure on San Pedro. Falling behind big early will mean defeat.

San Pedro: The Pirates are determined to win the 4-A title but might take the unknown Conquistadores a little lightly. If San Pedro plays a normal game, it should win. But a mistake-filled early going, giving El Camino Real confidence, can make this game reminiscent to San Pedro's struggles with Crenshaw and Narbonne.
