CITY, BFI YET TO RESOLVE SUNSHINE CANYON CONTRACT-RENEWAL DIFFERENCES.

Byline: Kerry Cavanaugh Staff Writer

On the eve On the Eve (Накануне in Russian) is the third novel by famous Russian writer Ivan Turgenev, best known for his short stories and the novel Fathers and Sons.  of a deadline to renew the city's contract with Sunshine Canyon Landfill, city leaders were still trying to reach a compromise Monday on disposal costs with the landfill owner.

Over the past three days, City Council President Eric Garcetti Eric Garcetti (born 1971) is the son of former Los Angeles county district attorney Gil Garcetti, and was elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 2001. He was reelected in 2005.  spoke with Sunshine Canyon's owner, Browning-Ferris Industries Browning-Ferris Industries, or "BFI", is a licensed trademark of Allied Waste Industries, a North America waste collection company. Many local units of Allied Waste are still known as BFI in the markets they serve. , and its parent company, Allied Waste, but they still hadn't reached agreement by late Monday.

So far, the trash company has refused to consider changing the contract to allow the city to divert some trash to other landfills, saying the contract is an all-or-nothing proposal.

Garcetti said Monday that he hopes for an additional two weeks to persuade Allied to change the contract and allow L.A. to enact its new policy of reducing the amount of trash that goes to Sunshine Canyon Landfill.

that we can make the case, and nobody has to go nuclear on either side. This will require the team of council and mayor hand-in-hand making it clear to Allied where we are headed with our trash policy.''

BFI BFI - brute force and ignorance  officials did not return calls Monday. But the company said last week that the city's demand to renegotiate re·ne·go·ti·ate

the contract at the last minute was unreasonable and unfair.

At issue is the city's five-year, $157 million contract with BFI, which requires L.A. to send almost all its trash to Sunshine Canyon to get the low, $25 per ton, price. That works out to $29 million per year.

However, last year, the City Council approved a new trash policy to reduce the amount of refuse going to Sunshine Canyon by 600 tons per day, or 17 percent, in the first year, with more reductions over five years until the city no longer uses the Granada Hills Landfill.

The diverted trash would go to landfills in Riverside County or the San Joaquin Valley Noun 1. San Joaquin Valley - a vast valley in central California known for its rich farmland

The policy is part of Councilman Greig Smith's RENEW LA plan to wean wean (wen) to discontinue breast feeding and substitute other feeding habits.

the city off urban landfills in favor of developing more recycling programs and trash-to-energy technology.

BFI has said that if the city sends trash to other landfills, the disposal price would nearly double to $45 per ton.

That could add millions more to the city's annual trash expenses, which come from the same fund that pays for policing and street repair.
