Citrix developed the industry-standard Intelligent Console Architecture to provide fast remote Windows communication capabilities for its line of remote computing software. The ICA distributed Windows architecture runs Windows client applications directly on Citrix application servers. Only user interface objects and events are distributed to remote PCs. As a result, ICA allows standard Windows LAN-based and client/server applications to perform at very high speed over low bandwidth connections, including standard telephone lines.

Early benchmarks show that the new ICA3 distributed Windows protocol is twice as fast as its predecessor, ICA2, which became the underpinning for the company's award-winning WinViewTM for Networks software.
