BURBANK - Plans to consolidate the National Guard armories in Burbank and Glendale are moving forward, and each city now must apply for state and federal grants to fund a new facility at Burbank Airport.

The Burbank City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to work with Glendale in applying for up to $30 million in grants to relocate re·lo·cate

Last month the Burbank Airport Authority submitted a proposal to the Federal Aviation Administration Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), component of the U.S. Department of Transportation that sets standards for the air-worthiness of all civilian aircraft, inspects and licenses them, and regulates civilian and military air traffic through its air traffic control  that included plans for the new armory. Glendale and Burbank officials agree the airport location would be a good one. It would provide more security for the airport, the freeways around it and other nearby facilities, they say.

``We would actually get better service if it was built there,'' said Elaine Aguilar, assistant to Glendale's city manager. ``It's still very close to our city.''

Glendale uses its armory during cold winters as a shelter for the homeless, and it is unclear how that service would be replaced.

The current facilities - on 1.7 acres on Colorado Boulevard Colorado Boulevard (or Colorado Street) is a major east-west street in Southern California, United States. Officials in both Glendale and Burbank want to build public parks on those two lots.

``Both of (our cities) have better uses of the properties the armories are on,'' said Mike Flad, director of the Park, Recreation and Community Services agency in Burbank. ``Both armories are falling apart. It's also part of a plan to consolidate smaller armories into larger, regional ones.''
