), residential and nonresidential (commercial) construction saw double-digit percentage increases in August over July, while public works construction activity (highway-heavy along with government owned buildings) was up 9.5 percent from July and also up 17.9 percent in year-to-date figures.

Total construction activity for the month of August was $5.58 billion, up 20.0 percent from July and up 1.0 percent from August 2000.

Ben Bartolotto, Director of CIRB, reports this July-to-August increase is due mainly to an increase in the volume of very large projects. While the August figures look good compared to the abrupt drop in July, caused by a decline in large projects, Director Bartolotto believes the August totals conceivably con·ceive

"The initial impact of the terrorist attack of September 11th, along with the uncertainty on how this event will affect the economy and construction in particular, leaves the outlook for the next few months in a state of limbo limbo

," says Bartolotto. Early reports show a drop off in the number of daily permits in the second half of September. This uncertainty could result in disruptions in construction activities for a certain percentage of projects that might be delayed over the remainder of this year and into 2002.

In the first eight months of 2001, statewide public works construction totals $11.88 billion, up $1.808 billion, or 17.9 percent from the same period last year. Major projects in August include two waste water treatment projects totaling $78 million, and seven highway projects totaling $170 million, including a $31.6 million seismic retrofit ret·ro·fit
