CIPRICO EXPANDS DISK ARRAY LINE; 4+1 DISK ARRAY ANNOUNCED

MINNEAPOLIS, June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Ciprico Inc. (NASDAQ: CPCI) today announced the expansion of their second generation line of high performance disk arrays to include a 4+1 disk array -- the Rimfire 6700, with capacities up to 8GB. Ciprico now offers arrays ranging in capacity from two to 16 GB with performance up to 20 MB/second.
Ciprico's Rimfire 6700 series are SCSI-2 to SCSI-2 disk arrays using a RAID-3 implementation with 3.5 inch disks. The new 4+1 uses four data disks plus one redundant disk to provide high performance, fault tolerant mass storage. In the event of a drive failure, user data requests continue to be serviced with no performance degradation. The failed disk is "hot swapped" -- replaced while the array remains online. Data is automatically regenerated on the replacement disk by the Rimfire 6700 disk array controller.
"The 4+1 configuration is ideal for our customers who require high performance but do not have large capacity requirements," said Bill Moren, senior product line manager. "With this product, we are now able to offer capacities to meet almost any storage requirement."
Another key feature of the Rimfire 6700 series is the ability to replace failed disks with non-matched disks. This feature eliminates any concern of future availability of SCSI-2 disks purchased today.
The Rimfire 6700 is upward-compatible with Ciprico's Rimfire 6710 series of 8+1 disk arrays by using a field upgrade kit. The kit converts the Rimfire 6700 into an 8+1 disk array for users who require additional capacity or performance.
Ciprico offers the Rimfire 6700 in a desktop, tower or rack mountable enclosure. OEM pricing begins at $19,250 for 4.2 GB of usable capacity. To OEMs Ciprico will offer the subsystem without disks or just the individual array controller board. The Rimfire 6700 is in full production and available immediately.
Ciprico designs, manufactures and markets disk arrays and intelligent SCSI adapters for the high-performance segment of the computer industry's mass storage market. The company's products are sold worldwide by Ciprico's direct sales force and independent representatives to original equipment manufacturers, and through computer distributors and resellers to end users.
