came within inches of an amazing 1,500-1 win at Turnberry, scene of his legendary 1977 Duel in the Sun win, but after four days of heroics the 59year-old fell agonisingly short.

Instead Cink, who matched Watson's two under total, won the four hole play off by six shots on an afternoon of stunning drama which also saw a "sickening" near miss by Lee Westwood. Five-times Open champ Watson had the perfect chance to become the oldest ever Open winner.

He drove off on the 18th one shot better off then Cink in the clubhouse, but his second went through the green. A poor putt back left him with a 6ft putt to win, which dribbled wide.

Devastated Watson said: "It tears at your gut, like losing always did. I was in position to win, but didn't do it at the last hole. It would have been one hell of a story. But this ain't a funeral."

Collecting his first major, Cink said: "I can certainly understand the story unfolding with Tom.

"But I don't feel ashamed. I am pleased as punch."

Shot of the day: Paul Lawrie's four iron to the par five seventh went in the hole for an albatross. He said: "I have not holed a second shot to a par five before. It was 213 to the pin and I saw it go in, which was nice."

Thomas Levet also aced the 206-yard par three 15th. Hole of the day: The par four 18th was 461 yards down wind but Lee Westwood, Chris Wood and Tom Watson all bogeyed the 72nd hole as the tension rose. Nightmare of the day: Ross Fisher. The world No. 21 topped the leaderboard lead·er·board
