CINEMA: Battle of the Xs; GO2.

WHO ARE THE X-MEN? People born with super-powers. All human beings have a lot of spare and unused DNA DNA: see nucleic acid.
DNA
 or deoxyribonucleic acid

One of two types of nucleic acid (the other is RNA); a complex organic compound found in all living cells and many viruses. It is the chemical substance of genes.
and in the X-Men's case, some of that so-called "junk DNA" has become activated and given them extraordinary powers and abilities. They are the next stage in human evolution.

WHY ARE THEY CALLED X-MEN? Because the DNA that gives them their powers is called the x-factor. Also, they are all students of Professor X.

WHEN WERE THEY CREATED? In 1963 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirky for Marvel Comics in America and have been Marvel's best-seller for four decades.

WHO ARE THE MEMBERS OF THE X-MEN?

The original team was Professor X, Cyclops, Angel, Iceman Iceman

Body of a man found sealed in a glacier in the Tirolean Ötztal Alps in 1991 and dated to 3300 BC. It has revealed significant details of everyday life during the Neolithic Period.
, Beast and Marvel Girl. Many other characters have come and gone over the years and an entirely new team was introduced at one point, featuring Storm, Nightcrawler, Sunfire, Thunderbird, Wolverine wolverine or glutton, largest member of the weasel family, Gulo gulo, found in the northern parts of North America and Eurasia, usually in high mountains near the timberline or in tundra. , Banshee banshee

, and Colossus Colossus - (A huge and ancient statue on the Greek island of Rhodes).

1. The Colossus and Colossus Mark II computers used by Alan Turing at Bletchley Park, UK during the Second World War to crack the "Tunny" cipher produced by the Lorenz SZ 40 and SZ 42 machines.
. Rogue, Gambit and Shadowcat were among later arrivals. So there is plenty of scope for sequels!

WHICH OF THOSE ARE IN THE FILM?

Professor X, Cyclops and Marvel Girl (but without that name and known just as Jean Grey); plus Wolverine, Storm and Rogue. There is also a cameo role by a young Iceman.

SO WHAT DO THE X-MEN ACTUALLY DO?

They're the good guys, protecting a society that hates and fears them and fighting evil mutants who want to dominate or destroy mankind.

WHO ARE THE BADDIES?

The arch-villain is Magneto magneto: see generator.
magneto

Permanent-magnet alternating generator used mainly to produce electrical current for the ignition system in various types of internal-combustion engines, such as aircraft, marine, tractor, and motorcycle engines.
, an embittered em·bit·ter

concentration camp survivor who has the power to create magnetic fields and therefore can exert complete control over all metal. He runs a Brotherhood of Evil
For the team of mutant terrorists, see Brotherhood of Mutants

The Brotherhood of Evil is a fictional group of DC Comics supervillains, arch-enemies of the original Doom Patrol and the Teen Titans.
mutants which - in the movie - are Toad, Sabretooth Sabretooth or sabertooth can refer to:
  • Saber-toothed cat, especially the smilodon, which is often but erroneously called the saber-toothed tiger.
  • Sabretooth (comics), a Marvel Comics supervillain.
  • Sabertooth fish, a deep-sea fish found in the tropics.
and Mystique. In the comics there have been many other members and many other villains.

WHY HAVEN'T WE SEEN THEM BEFORE? There was an X-Men cartoon with 76 episodes airing between 1992 and 1997. 20th Century Fox has battled for years to secure the movie rights and the $75 million project was first announced in 1996.

WHO IS IN THE FILM?

Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackson, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Tyler Mane, Ray Park and Anna Paquin.

AND WHICH ACTORS NEVER MADE IT?

Vanessa Williams and Angela Bassett were up for Berry's role as Storm; Ed Norton and Brad Pitt were ruled out of the Cyclops role; Christopher Walken was to have been Magneto and Russell Crowe, Mel Gibson and Dougray Scott were in the running for the Wolverine role.

WHO IS X-CITING IN THE FILM?

Rebecca RomIjn-Stamos steals scenes as the shape-shifting and deadly Mystique and Hugh Jackson's Wolverine is totally spot-on. McKellen and Stewart slot well into their roles, while Ray Park (Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace) gives new life to Toad.

AND X-CRUCIATING?

Halle Berry's Storm is a right wet-weekend, so bland she's invisible for half of the film.

IS THERE A SEQUEL?

Hugh Jackson has admitted he's contracted to a sequel, so yes!
