The original scary show for "tweens" has been a network staple on Nickelodeon in the US since it premiered in 1992. Production on the new episodes began on October 4, 1999, extending the library to 91 episodes, and they will air on Nickelodeon in early 2000.

In this new season, the Midnight Society is back with an original set of stories sure to deliver the scares kids have come to expect from ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK? The Midnight Society, the group of kids who gather each week at the opening of the show to share frightening tales of mystery and suspense, is led by returning member, Tucker (Daniel De Santo). Each story is narrated by a member of the Midnight society while the action segues into a new cast each week.

The first three-part special episode, titled "The Tale of the Silver Sight," has all the members of the Midnight Society go out on a real adventure, as Gary (Ross Hull), the president of the Midnight Society from the first five episodes and brother of Tucker, returns to track down the members of the mission very first Midnight Society from way back in 1937. Other stories include: "The Tale of Highway 13," about a cool muscle car that's not what it seems; "The Tale of The Reanimator," about a potion that brings dead plants back to life; "The Tale The Photo Finish," about an old photo that always seems to be changing; and "The Tale of Many Faces," about a strange woman that wants to steal an aspiring model's face.

In related news, ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK? continues to be an international success. During MIPCOM 99, a total of 78 half-hours of the series has been sold to Nickelodeon in the UK, as well as to Canal J in France and YLE in Finland. The UK's ITV Network continues its commitment by acquiring Series 6. The show has now been sold to 116 territories worldwide.
