CIMA And TracSat to Provide Construction Equipment Fleet Monitoring and Tracking; System utilizes ORBCOMM's LEO satellite network.

DULLES, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 23, 1999--ORBCOMM Global, L.P. (ORBCOMM), the first commercial provider of global low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite data and messaging communications services, today announced that its newly-formed business unit, TracSat, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Construction Industry Manufacturers Association (CIMA) to offer a revolutionary construction equipment fleet monitoring and tracking service. The CIMA-TracSat service will rely on ORBCOMM's network of LEO satellites to determine the location and monitor the performance of construction machinery anywhere in the world. Roles and responsibilities of each company will be defined in a formal contract following CIMA's Board of Directors' approval.

With small communications devices attached to each piece of machinery in the fleet, the CIMA-TracSat service will transmit data to a centralized database for secure access via the World Wide Web, e-mail, pager or fax. The data will also be able to generate customized reports to fit individual needs. The use of ORBCOMM's cost-effective LEO satellite network will make the service uniquely affordable.

Beginning in July 1998, CIMA coordinated a comprehensive value analysis of the construction equipment industry with ORBCOMM, which included interviews with equipment manufacturers, distributors, end-users and rental, finance and insurance companies. This information was used by ORBCOMM to refine and target TracSat applications.

The CIMA-TracSat service can transmit data such as machine location and operating parameters including engine hours, operating temperatures, oil pressure and hydraulic system readouts. This information allows users to receive automatic notification of a "machine down" condition so service trucks can be dispatched quickly; improves preventive maintenance applications; enhances fleet utilization; and aids in quickly tracking down stolen units.
