CIGNA'S FIRST COMMUNITY COMMITMENT DAY GIVES 300 EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE TIME AND TALENTS

CIGNA'S FIRST COMMUNITY COMMITMENT DAY GIVES 300 EMPLOYEE
VOLUNTEERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE TIME AND TALENTS
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- In a series of focus groups, telephone and personal interviews, CIGNA (NYSE: CI) company employees declared their desire for opportunities to show their commitment to the communities in which they live and work.
The employees said that volunteering time and expertise to community-based organizations was as important as making a financial contribution.
In response to employees' desires, CIGNA's new Power of Personal Commitment Program offers ways for employees to give time, money, or both to community-based organizations. It's an employee's choice.
The Power of Personal Commitment includes a week-long series of events designed to help employees get involved in their communities. Some of the activities include a voter registration day and a volunteer fair as well as food, magazine and book drives.
An important part of the Power of Personal Commitment Program is CIGNA's first Community Commitment Day held today at Independence National Historical Park.
With hoes, pruning shears and rakes in hand, more than 300 CIGNA company employees paraded from their offices at Two Liberty Place, 16th and Chestnut streets, to the park to rake, weed and restore ivy and flower beds.
"Community Commitment Day offers employees a convenient way to give something back to the community and share the good feeling of volunteering with friends and co-workers," said Kevin Mitchell, chairman of the Power of Personal Commitment Program.
"We chose Independence National Historical Park as this year's Community Commitment Day project because we have a special bond with Independence Hall. CIGNA's first founding company, Insurance Company of North America, was formed in the Assembly Room of Independence Hall in 1792.
"Since we dedicated CIGNA's 200th anniversary year to the restoration and preservation of Independence National Historical Park, it's fitting that our first company-wide volunteer project be held here. Our employees even purchased tree seedlings so they could use the proceeds to buy a tree and plant it in the park.
"The Power of Personal Commitment program provides a more focused way to acknowledge those employees who already have made a personal commitment in areas such as teaching someone to read, registering someone to vote or helping us feed the hungry," added Mitchell. "It also gives us a forum to share new ideas and information with employees about volunteerism and helping others."
The CIGNA Companies are leading providers of insurance, health care, employee benefits, pension and investment management, and related financial services to businesses and individuals worldwide.
