 Federation's appeal of a district court ruling allowing students at private schools to play on public high school teams took a bit of a twist Thursday because the rule prohibiting such has changed, CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. Tornatore and Gonzalez wanted to play water polo, but St. Augustine, their Catholic high school in San Diego, failed to field a team. The youngsters then made the water polo team at a nearby public school, Patrick Henry High, but CIF rules banned them from playing.

Patterson said it is now permissible for youngsters attending a private school to play on public school teams under the following conditions:

``One, both principals have to agree; 2) The league has to agree; 3) If the league agrees, then the (CIF) section has to look at it; 4) Then the state executive committee has to approve it.''
