Hie and Lovemark each shot 6-under 66s on a day when only 17 of the 124 players were able to break par. Hie, a senior at Cerritos High, beat Lovemark in a one-hole playoff to capture medalist honors. Hie also shot a 66 last week to win the Southern Section individual title at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs.

Lovemark was 7 under through 17 holes, but dropped into a tie with Hie when he three-putted his last hole.

Saugus' Nick Delio knows all too well about three-putting. Delio shot 1-over 73 despite hitting all 18 greens. His downfall came in the short game, as he three-putted five holes.

Delio played a practice round Sunday at the SCGA course and shot a 4-under 68. Royal of Simi Valley's Matt Hoffenberg played a practice round Wednesday and shot 3-under 69, but Thursday he shot 2-over 74.

Oaks Christian of Westlake Village's Michael Casca tied Delio for the lowest score among area players. Casca shot a 73, but admitted to being a bit tired after playing in a tournament in Orlando, Fla., over the weekend.

Casca was the area's top finisher at the Southern Section championships last week.

Hie, Lovemark, Evan Emerick (Carlsbad, -3), James Erkenbeck (Torrey Pines, -3), Rickie Fowler (Murrieta Valley, -3), Bryan Hogan (Stockdale, -2), Kevin Sepulveda (Paso Robles Robles is a common surname in the Spanish language meaning oaks, and may refer to:

Cathedral Catholic and Torrey Pines each shot 363 to tie for the team title. After using the sixth players' score to determine the winner, Cathedral Catholic was awarded the title 439-444.

Damien of La Verne took third with a 368. Murrieta Valley, the Southern Section champion, took fourth with a 369, despite playing on its home course, and did not advance. Kennedy of Granada Hills finished last among the nine teams with a 457.
