CIF/SCGA CHAMPIONSHIP: HART, WESTLAKE SHOOT FOR FINAL BERTHS.

Byline: Dave Shelburne Daily News Staff Writer

They're back.

Hart and Westlake highs return to the Southern Section team golf final today - both for the eighth time during the 1990s - bidding for, at the least, a berth in the June 8 CIF/SCGA championship.

The top four teams in today's 21-school competition, which starts at 7:30 a.m. at La Purisima in Lompoc, earn berths in the four-section CIF/SCGA match that is the closest Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  prep golfers get to a state championship.

Hart, which has never won a section title or qualified for the CIF/SCGA team final, appears to have the stuff to challenge for a championship.

The Indians' strengths are shot-making and confidence after going 42-1-1 with just one full-time returning starter.

``The kids think they can do it and that's all that counts,'' Hart coach Dennis Ford said after his team placed second in Monday's East regional by nine strokes on what Ford called an off day.

``They played very poorly and still were within hailing distance of a very good team (East region champion University from Irvine).''

Long Beach State-bound senior Ryan Wyman shot 2-under-par 70 to lead Hart at the East regional, where Andy Smith (76), Jeff Siembieda (77), Brian Edick (77) and Mark Lauver (78) completed the scoring in a 379-stroke total.

Westlake might have been a bit anxious awaiting the scoring tabulation tab·u·late

UCLA-bound J.T. Kohut led the Warriors at even-par 72, and Ian Medlock (74), Brian O'Flaherty (78), Lee Krieger (75) and Doug Miller (76) completed the scoring that got Westlake to the section final for an eighth time in nine years.

Like Hart, this is a team that could challenge for the title. Westlake has not always been sharp this season as injuries and inexperience Inexperience

(six sophomores among the top 10 players) have resulted in more losses (seven) than the Warriors have sustained in the past three seasons combined.

But those young players are now almost a full season older and better, and the growth factor showed in the regional, where three of the sophomores scored - O'Flaherty, Krieger and Miller.

Westlake has one more intangible going for it in today's title push: Kohut has wanted to play for a section champion since he joined the Warriors four years ago, and this is his last chance.
