CIENFUEGOS PLAYS IN OPENER AS GALAXY WINS SHOOTOUT : GALAXY 2 COLORADO 1.

Byline: Fred J. Robledo

In his luxury suite at the Rose Bowl, Major League Soccer commissioner Doug Logan Doug Logan was the first commissioner of Major League Soccer, serving in that capacity from 1996 to 1999, when he was replaced by Don Garber.

In 2001, he was brought in as a consultant in the creation of a professional Rugby union league, much in the same vein as MLS by

It was a meeting that convinced the three-time MLS See multilevel security.  All-Star to end his holdout - at least for now - so that Cienfuegos could make an appearance during the Galaxy's 2-1 shootout Shootout

and Clint Mathis scored in the shootout to give L.A. the victory while David Vaudreuil notched the lone Rapids shootout goal.

Cienfuegos, who sat near the end of the bench in the first half, did more for his bargaining power by not playing than when he actually entered in the 53rd minute to loud cheers from the measly measly

Chants of ``Cienfuegos'' were heard throughout the opening half, certainly loud enough for Logan to notice while the two sides argue over his financial worth to the league.

The midfield general came in and helped strengthen the so-so performances of youngsters Daniel Hernandez and Joey Franchino, but it wasn't enough to salvage a victory in regulation.

With Cienfuegos itching to get in along the sideline, midfielder Clint Mathis, expected to share a bulk of the midfield responsibilities with Cienfuegos this season, needed only minutes to display his one-legged something of a hop-dance goal celebration in the 14th minute.

Welton weaved his way through Colorado's central defense, attempting a shot that bounced to the left of the Rapids goal off defender David Vaudreuil's leg toward Mathis.

Mathis, unmarked on the right side, settled the ball from the air with his chest, then one-touched a strike to the left corner to give L.A. a 1-0 lead.

The Rapids answered in the 34th minute, getting a goal from midfielder Ross Paule.

Joey DiGiamarino sent a looping cross in the Galaxy box for Jorge Dely Valdes, who was watched closely by Greg Vanney. Valdes and Vanney lunged, but the ball appeared to sail off Vanney's head toward Paule.

Paule picked it out of the air, hammering home a 20-yard shot to the left-corner past Galaxy keeper Kevin Hartman to notch the score.
