CIENA Appoints Gerald H. Taylor to Board; Former MCI CEO Joins Optical Networking Leader.

LINTHICUM, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 14, 2000

CIENA Corporation Ciena Corporation NASDAQ: CIEN develops and markets communications network platforms and software, and offers professional services. The Company's broadband access, data and optical networking platforms, software tools, and global network services support worldwide telecom  (Nasdaq: CIEN CIEN Ciena Corporation (stock symbol) ), today announced that Gerald H. Taylor, former Chief Executive Officer of MCI Communications Corporation, has joined the Company's Board of Directors.

During his employment with MCI (1) (Media Control Interface) A high-level programming interface from Microsoft and IBM for controlling multimedia devices. It provides commands and functions to open, play and close the device.

(2) (Microwave Communications Inc.
, Mr. Taylor was integrally involved in establishing MCI as one of the world's largest telecommunications companies. In addition to his roles as Chief Executive Officer from November 1996 to October 1998, as President from July 1994 to November 1996, and as Chief Operating Officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Mr. Taylor, 58, received his B.S. in physics from San Francisco State University     [  in 1969. Taylor also served in the United States Air Force United States Air Force (USAF)

His previous Board experience includes MCI WorldCom (1998 - 1999), MCI Communications Corp. (1994 - 1998), British Telecom (1996-1998), Avantel (1994-1998) and Concert (1993 - 1998).
