CIDA allocates $1 million to groups working in Asia earthquake zone.


TORONTO -- The Honourable Aileen Carroll M. Aileen Carroll, PC, MP, BA, BEd (born June 1, 1944, Halifax, Nova Scotia) is a Canadian politician and was Minister for International Cooperation in the Paul Martin government. As a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons she represented the district of Barrie, Ontario. , Minister of International Cooperation, today announced the allocation of $6 million for support of humanitarian assistance and relief efforts in the areas affected by the earthquake in South Asia This article is about the geopolitical region in Asia.  for the first earthquake relief projects under the South Asia Earthquake Matching Fund The South Asia Earthquake Matching Fund is an initiative by the Canadian International Development Agency created on October 11, 2005, to match funds donated by Canadians between October 8 and October 26, 2005 to charitable organizations recognized by Revenue Canada in relief of  and $5 million will respond to the appeal launched by the United Nations. These amounts are within the $20 million the Government of Canada The Government of Canada is the federal government of Canada. Among the allocations made are

* $500,000 to World Vision to provide tents, blankets and basic household items to ensure minimum shelter needs are met and affected families are protected against imminent winter in the affected district of Manshera, and;

* $500,000 to CARE Canada to clean, acquire, protect and maintain safe water systems, provide basic clothing, shelter and blankets, as well as household items such as cooking kits for up to 10,000 families for approximately six months.

Under the South Asia Earthquake Matching Fund, the Government of Canada matches dollar-for-dollar--all donations by individual Canadians to registered charitable organizations for relief, rehabilitation rehabilitation: see physical therapy. , and reconstruction in the region. The matched funds will be placed in a pool, and Canadian development organizations can submit proposals for relief and reconstruction to this pool.
