CIBA VISION CORPORATION EXPANDS RESEARCH

 DULUTH, Ga., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- CIBA Vision Corporation, a division of CIBA-GEIGY, has entered into a seven-year contract with the Cooperative Research Center for Eye Research and Technology (CRCERT), one of the world's leading ocular research groups.
 The Cooperative Research Center is an Australian Government initiative that links industry with universities in Australia and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization.
 The objective of this collaborative research project is to develop unique and innovative products in the contact lens field and bring them to market as quickly as possible.
 Over the next three years, CIBA Vision will provide in excess of 5 million Swiss Francs ($3.38 million U.S.) to support this research effort. Funding is also being matched by the Australian Government.
 Research will focus on the development of new materials and surface treatments to be used for improved contact lenses and artificial corneas. Through this unique collaboration, CIBA Vision said it hopes to provide innovative products for vision correction.
 A further expansion of CIBA Vision's research efforts will also involve use of the resources of the CIBA-GEIGY Corporate Research Unit, located in Marly and Basel, Switzerland, to provide particular expertise in the areas of material science polymer chemistry and biophysics.
 CRCERT is a multi-disciplinary group with expertise in the areas of cornea and contact lens research, biomedical engineering, biomaterials and polymers, biomolecular engineering and biophysics. The group is led by Professor Brien Holden, an internationally acclaimed contact lens and cornea researcher.
 CIBA Vision is the second-largest manufacturer of ct?act lenses and lens care products worldwide. Focused research such as this initiative, which results in innovative products, will continue to support CIBA Vision's rapid growth through the 1990s. CIBA Vision's research and development groups are located at its new worldwide headquarters in Atlanta, and Aschaffenburg, Germany.
