CHURCH TEENS PLAN WORKING VACATION; STUDENTS TO REBUILD CENTER IN ISRAEL.

Byline: Teresa Jimenez Daily News Staff Writer

While many teen-agers spend their vacations by the swimming pool, some young members of Faith Community Church have been earning money to pay for their own trip to help rebuild a youth center in Israel.

``We're really going to help others who are less fortunate,'' said Jenny Paslay, a recent graduate of Canyon High School Canyon High School can refer to:

``Our parents are excited,'' said Christina Maragopoulos, a 17-year-old student at Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Christian. ``They wish they could go.''

Jeremy Cook, student ministries director for the church, organized the trip. Cook said he was so moved by his own trip to Israel in February that he immediately began discussing the possibility of a trip for students. Nine students plan to make the trip, which costs $2,100 per person.

On Saturday, the group will host a carnival carnival, communal celebration, especially the religious celebration in Catholic countries that takes place just before Lent. Since early times carnivals have been accompanied by parades, masquerades, pageants, and other forms of revelry that had their origins in , garage-style sale and auction at the top of Meadow meadow

The garage sale will begin at 8 a.m. and will continue through the day. The festival, which will include games, barbecue barbecue [West Indian or South American], in the United States, traditionally an open-air gathering, political or social, in which meats are roasted whole over a pit of embers and food and drink are liberally enjoyed.  food and music, will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The church already offers twice-yearly trips to Mexico, where students work with children and serve food to the poor. Cook hopes an Israel mission also will become regularly available for area teen-agers.

``It makes everything that they learn in church come alive,'' Cook said. ``After I went, Easter was totally different for me.''

During the Aug. 8-21 trip, the students will go to the refugee refugee, one who leaves one's native land either because of expulsion or to escape persecution. The center needs a new roof and paint, Cook said. American students also will run a basketball camp for children in Beitjalla, he said.

After the work is done, the students will take a six-day tour of Israel.

``When I came up with the idea, a good friend at church said he knew someone in the Midwest who had done this five times,'' Cook said. ``He told me all of the great things that come out of it.''

The students, who all have been on at least one church mission to Mexico, said they look forward to the experience in Israel.

``I like to go tell everyone about God,'' said Stacy Maragopoulos, a 16-year-old student at Santa Clarita Christian. ``I also learn patience because a lot of times they don't understand what I'm saying or they can't relate to me.''

``I'm nervous about the flight; it's 14 hours,'' Phillips said. ``It's also a different culture, and we'll be helping more people.''
