Lydia Mather, a member of the Twelfth Church of Christ Scientist near the corner of Hamlin Street and Cedros Avenue, said the vandals apparently came late Saturday night or early Sunday morning Sunday Morning may refer to:

``They caused considerable damage. They took out the main church sign and the ground lights that lit up the sign. They tied it up to a vehicle, pulled it out, smashed it up and left it there,'' Mather said.

She and other neighbors said they thought it might have something to do with the community meetings.

``The neighborhood is really coming together,'' she said. ``We're really taking back the neighborhood and making it safe for everyone. Maybe somebody doesn't like that.''

Another neighbor would give her name only as Maria, saying she was concerned about problems with street gangs in the area.

She said she felt the vandals were trying to intimidate the church members and people who live nearby ``to cease our neighborhood friendly activities.''
