But on Sunday, more than a decade after the Rev. Steven Day began his ministry, the Community Christian Church held its first service in a building the church can call its own.

``We're excited,'' said Day, following Sunday services in the new sanctuary at 216 Moorpark Ave. ``I feel like we've lived out of a suitcase for 13 years. We truly care more taking the Gospel to the people than we do about a building. But we're thankful to have a building to call home.''

The larger facility will allow the church to launch or expand a series of youth and other programs, including City Impact, which offers counseling services for families, children and individuals of all ages.

``I feel that this building is going to allow us to have a solid point within the community to minister to the community,'' said church elder Alan Vollbrecht. ``We've been a church (for years). Now we just have a landmark to work from.''

Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Evangelistic Association sent Day to plant the seeds for a congregation. Over the course of a year, he knocked on some 5,000 doors, seeking new congregants for Bible study. A year later, they held their first public service. On several occasions, the church tried to buy or lease permanent facilities, but the deals never went through. Then about 18 months ago, the congregation decided it was time to find a permanent site. Within eight months, they raised $150,000 for a down payment and then an additional $100,000 for remodeling remodeling /re·mod·el·ing/ (re-mod´el-ing) reorganization or renovation of an old structure.

``It's going to be great,'' said church member Shelley Liston, who remembers when services were held at Peach Hill School and as recently as last week at Mesa Verde Junior High School. ``Now we can have everything here, and we don't have to transport things back and forth from people's homes.''
