The youth group at Woodland Hills Community Church will be collecting dollars in stockpots for Souper Bowl Sunday, a fund-raising event that benefits local food pantries.

The first Souper Bowl of Caring was in 1990 in South Carolina South Carolina, state of the SE United States. It is bordered by North Carolina (N), the Atlantic Ocean (SE), and Georgia (SW). Facts and Figures

. Since then, youth group members have taken charge of organizing and collecting donations. The event went nationwide in 1993.

``My church participated in the past few years. But this is the first year our group was asked if we'd do it,'' said 18-year-old Holly Medvitz. ``It's great that we can help people out who need it.''

The 20-member youth group, of high school age, is no stranger to community activism. Last summer, the senior high school students raised funds that enabled them to go to New Mexico New Mexico, state in the SW United States. At its northwestern corner are the so-called Four Corners, where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah meet at right angles; New Mexico is also bordered by Oklahoma (NE), Texas (E, S), and Mexico (S).  to a Zuni reservation for a two-week working vacation that benefited the American Indian American Indian

Seizing the opportunity to use football as a metaphor in Sunday's sermons, Pastor Phil Price echoes Medvitz's sentiments about caring for others.

``It's important to be reminded and also acknowledge that there are weaker people, people in need in our community. . . . We need to start seeing God or see the sacredness in the very people who it's easy to push aside, the weak and the disenfranchised,'' said the pastor who is in his seventh year at WWCC WWCC Walla Walla Community College (Washington state)

Claire Hoffman, the head of the ``faith works'' social action committee said that last year the 50-year-old church raised over $200 for the West Valley Food Pantry which is located at another Woodland Hills church, Prince of Peace Episcopal.

``These types of drives really help the pantries,'' said Margaret Shively, 10-year supervisor of the West Valley Food Pantry. ``We feed 600 families a month. The people who we help are either low income, older people dependent solely on Social Security, the temporarily out of work and the homeless.''

When asked what people can donate, Shively said, ``We always need the nonperishable foods like tuna, peanut butter, canned goods. We get bread donations from the local markets. We accept citrus fruits from backyard trees, too.''

The West Valley Food Pantry is open for donations 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Prince of Peace Episcopal Church Episcopal Church, Anglican church of the United States.
