CHURCH GROUP TAKES ON GRAFFITI; ANNUAL FUND-RAISER HELPS TROUBLED YOUTHS.Byline: Cecilia Chan Staff Writer Nearly a dozen youngsters will hoist paint brushes today to make a difference in their community during the second annual Graffiti Blitz, sponsored by Faith Tabernacle Tabernacle (tăb`ərnăk'əl), in the Bible, the portable holy place of the Hebrews during their desert wanderings. It was a tent, like the portable tent-shrines used by ancient Semites, set up in each camp; eventually it housed the Ark United Pentecostal Church. ``It just popped in my head one day it's a neat way of doing some kind of civic pride effort as well as raising funds for a worthwhile cause,'' said the Rev. Derek G. Stucki. Ten children, ages 11-17, solicited sponsors whose donations will go toward the church's annual fund-raiser, Sheaves sheaves 1 n. Stucki, teen-agers and adult church members will return to last year's spot, a Ventura County flood control channel Flood control channels are a series of large, concrete, and empty (except when a flood is actually present) open-air channels that extend a ways below the street levels of some larger cities, so that if and when a flood occurs, the flood will run into the channels, and proceed to be , located between the Ventura Freeway The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California running from Ventura to Pasadena. Stucki estimated that section of the county's network of channels stretches a mile, from Ventu Park Road to the Rancho Conejo Boulevard off-ramp, with much of it fronted by an apartment complex. ``Last year about this time there was fresh paint from tags so it's an ongoing area because of the location, its relative anonymity, and you can't really see what folks are in there doing,'' he said. The church approached the city and the state Department of Transportation last year with the idea of cleaning up graffiti, but the agencies couldn't identify an area, Stucki said. ``We went out and found our own. ``I suppose you change your thinking and think like one of those folks (who tags),'' he said of finding the place. Actually ``one of the kids in our youth group tipped us off that that was probably a good spot, so we ended up there.'' The teen-agers have solicited sponsors and so far raised $650 toward their goal of $2,000, said Brandon Waits, a church member who works with the congregation's youths. Last year's Graffiti Blitz raised more than $1,000. ``The funds are going around the world to help those less fortunate than us,'' Stucki said. ``And our young people are learning what it means to serve and give, and that is the grandest of all.'' |
