CHURCH & DWIGHT RESPONDS TO GROWING DEMAND FOR ITS WATER TREATMENT METHOD

PRINCETON, N.J., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Church & Dwight Co., Inc. (NYSE: CHD), manufacturer of ARM & HAMMER(R) brand products, is responding to the growing demand for the company's water treatment method by trademarking its sodium bicarbonate for corrosion control under the new brand name: ALKALINITY FIRST(TM).
In addition, effective April 1993, ALKALINITY FIRST has been certified by NSF International under NSF Standard 60 for drinking water treatment chemicals. NSF Standard 60 was developed to establish minimum requirements for the control of potential adverse human health effects from products added directly to water for its treatment and indirectly to water via contact with treatment, storage, transmission and distribution system components. NSF certification was granted at the company's Old Fort, Ohio, and Green River, Wyo., plants.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that in 1990, approximately 3 million children in the United States had blood lead levels high enough to affect intelligence and development. According to the EPA, lead in drinking water, although rarely the sole cause of lead poisoning, can significantly increase a person's total lead exposure, particularly the exposure of infants who drink baby formulas and concentrated juices that are mixed with water. The EPA estimates that drinking water can make up 20 percent or more of a person's total exposure to lead. The EPA recently announced that water systems in more than 800 communities nationwide exceed the EPA limit of 15 parts per billion (ppb) lead in drinking water.
Church & Dwight's sodium bicarbonate-based treatment currently is being used by numerous municipalities throughout the United States to dramatically lower lead and copper levels in drinking water supplies, thereby enabling water suppliers to comply with the EPA's stringent lead and copper guidelines.
ALKALINITY FIRST sodium bicarbonate controls corrosion by buffering pH and adding natural alkalinity to drinking water. The sodium bicarbonate formulation forms a protective carbonate coating on the interior surfaces of pipes and fixtures, inhibiting lead, copper and other metals from leaching into the drinking water. In fact, laboratory and applications testing has shown that sodium bicarbonate treatment rapidly results in significant reductions in lead levels.
ALKALINITY FIRST does not create new problems in the wastewater treatment plant, since it introduces no heavy metals or phosphates into the water system. It is free flowing and does not result in scale build-up or pipe constriction. In addition, it is non-irritating and safe to handle.
Church & Dwight Co., Inc., Princeton, is the world's largest manufacturer of sodium bicarbonate. The company also offers the industry's broadest selection of sodium bicarbonate products.
