CHRYSLER TRUCK SALES UP AGAIN WITH ANOTHER MINIVAN RECORD
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- A record November for minivan sales, Chrysler's fourth-straight monthly record, helped the corporation to a 10.2-percent increase in total truck sales over November 1990. This also was Chrysler's fourth-straight monthly increase for truck sales.
With total truck sales of 65,350 and car sales of 60,855, Chrysler's total vehicle sales of 126,205 were up one-tenth percent over a year ago.
"Car buyers haven't completely abandoned the market; they've switched to minivans," said Tom Pappert, Chrysler vice president of Sales.
Chrysler reported 30,941 minivan sales in posting its best November since the company introduced these vehicles in 1983. Chrysler this year also set minivan sales records for August (29,572), September (29,360) and October (35,576). The streak has lifted Chrysler minivan sales to 354,399 for the calendar year, a 4-percent increase over last year, and close to a 50-percent share of the segment.
Jeep Cherokee and Wrangler and Dodge Dakota and Ram pickups also contributed significantly to the continued increase in truck sales. Cherokee sales of 11,136 were up 12 percent, Wrangler sales of 3,344 were up 7 percent, Dakota sales of 8,111 were up 59 percent and Ram pickup sales of 6,216 were up 19 percent.
Although total car sales were down 9 percent, nameplates scoring increases included Chrysler LeBaron, up 51 percent; Chrysler New Yorker, up 26 percent; Dodge Stealth, up 11; Shadow, up 1, and Eagle Summit, up 36. Jeep/Eagle division was up 6 percent.
