CHRYSLER SCORES BEST JUNE IN FIVE YEARS, SETS SEVERAL NEW 'BEST-QUARTER' RECORDS

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation's total June sales of 204,700 vehicles marked the best June performance since 1988 and a 27-percent improvement from a year ago.
It was the 17th consecutive monthly increase for total vehicle sales. Chrysler (NYSE: C) also topped 1 million vehicle sales for the calendar year during June -- some 45 days ahead of last year's pace.
Total car sales in June were 82,261, up 38 percent from last year. Truck sales totaled 122,439, a 20-percent hike from last year and another all-time record performance.
It was the fourth consecutive best month ever for trucks, cars posted the eighth consecutive monthly increase, and total retail sales were up 32 percent, the 19th consecutive monthly increase and the highest June on record, noted Theodor R. Cunningham, executive vice president, Sales and Marketing and Minivan Platform general manager.
"News this good can never get too old," he said. "But I think the story that's really unfolding here is Customer One. Total focus on customer satisfaction is crucial in wringing record sales out of one of the slowest recovery periods ever.
"The cultural change in our dealerships, plus new products, has changed the showroom dynamics -- to the point that some of our greatest success currently is with our most steadfast products, like Dodge Spirit and Shadow, Plymouth Acclaim and Sundance, and Jeep Cherokee and Wrangler," Cunningham said.
Bearing him out, the Dodge Shadow was Chrysler's No. 1 selling car in June and set a new June record on sales of 10,997. Close behind were Plymouth Acclaim with 8,849 units sold, and Dodge Spirit with 8,847. Meanwhile, the newer Chrysler Concorde, New Yorker and LHS, Dodge Intrepid and Eagle Vision picked up the pace at a record 18,581.
Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager each set new June records and together established the second-best month ever on sales of 55,683.
Jeep posted the fourth consecutive best month ever on total sales of 39,097. While Grand Cherokee continued its record roll, with sales of 17,516, Cherokee also climbed by 28 percent to 13,361; and Wrangler hit 7,643 -- the second-best month ever.
"Best-ever" quarter records included total trucks, with sales of 359,096 outstripping the previous best of 296,342, set a year ago. Chrysler minivan sales totaled 161,526, beating the previous high of 141,612, also set a year ago. Dodge trucks outsold the second quarter of 1988 establishing a new record of 170,661. Eagle Vision, Talon and Summit joined to post sales of 22,091, breaking the old quarterly record for Eagle, set in 1989. Jeep went over the 100,000 mark for the first time in its history, with second-quarter sales of 110,138. The previous mark, set in the fourth quarter last year, was 81,588.
