CHRYSLER PADS MINIVAN RECORD ON AUGUST SALES INCREASES
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation

(NYSE: C) today reported sales increases for cars, trucks and total vehicles for the month of August.
Total car sales of 52,763 were up 7.7 percent compared to 50,869 a year ago. Truck sales of 74,038 climbed 22.8 percent from 62,620. Total vehicle sales of 126,801 were up from 113,489, a 16-percent gain.
The hefty increase in truck sales was helped by an August high for minivan sales as Chrysler continued to improve on its all-time model year record for minivans set last week.
August minivan sales of 31,250 raised the model year count to 407,925 with one month to go in the 1992 model year. The previous model year high was 392,938 in 1988. Minivan sales are running 18 percent ahead of last year.
Chrysler reported nearly a one-point increase in estimated total market share for truck to 17.7, and a 0.6-point gain for car to an 8.0-percent share. Retail sales, up 14 percent, contributed heavily to the increases.
Jeep/Eagle, Dodge and Chrysler/Plymouth reported sales increases of 34, 14 and 8 percent, respectively.
Combined sales of Jeep Cherokee and new Grand Cherokee topped 18,000 and sales of the new Vision sedan and the Talon lifted Eagle into the plus column.
Dodge Dakota sales of 10,476 were up 73 percent. Dodge Caravan sales of 16,019 were up nine percent and standard size Ram vans were up 43 percent. Daytona, Spirit and Dynasty sales were up 45, 25 and 32 percent.
LeBaron sedan, coupe and convertible models all were up for a combined 72-percent gain. And Fifth Avenue and New Yorker were up 48 and 34 percent.
A 57-percent increase in Spirit, Acclaim and LeBaron sedan sales over July reflected strong consumer response to the company's "No Charge Equipment Sale."
