CHRYSLER EMPLOYEES TO KICK OFF BONE MARROW DONOR DRIVE TODAY
A group of Chrysler employees will hold a news conference in the Henry Ford Hospital auditorium at 4 p.m. today (March 5) to announce plans for a bone marrow transplant drive targeted at African-Americans.
"There is a severe shortage of African-Americans willing to have their blood tested to see if they would be a match for someone in need of a bone marrow transplant," said Delores Cephus. She is a member of African-Americans Making A Difference, organizers of today's event.
The group will announce plans for a three-day marrow testing drive to be held next week at Henry Ford Hospital, Wayne County Community College and three Detroit churches.
According to Cephus, African-Americans make up only 3.7 percent of the 450,000 volunteers on the data base of the National Marrow Donor Program. Donors and recipients usually must come from the same racial group because blood antigens are inherited, much like skin and eye color.
Also attending today's event will be local patients with blood diseases who are waiting for donor matches, and a woman from Pennsylvania who is one of the first African-Americans in America to donate bone marrow.
