CHRYSLER DEBUTS FIRST NEON ENGINE (Product Announcement)

TRENTON, Mich., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) today introduced the most powerful base engine available in a subcompact car during production launch ceremonies at the company's Trenton Engine Plant.
With 132 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, the 16-valve SOHC 2.0-liter engine will be standard equipment in the all-new 1995 Plymouth and Dodge Neon.
U.S. Rep. John D. Dingell (D-Mich.), accompanied by UAW Local 372 President Don Lingar, marked the start of 2.0-liter engine production with plant employees, UAW, Trenton city, state and federal officials and guests.
"Trenton Engine workers are building all-American products that will help change small-car buyers' opinion about what an American car company can do," said Dingell.
Ronald R. Boltz, Chrysler's vice president for Product Strategy and Regulatory Affairs and general manager of Small Car Platform Operations, said plant employees worked closely with the company's Small Car Platform team to improve the processes used in building 2.0-liter engines.
"We've learned the hard lesson that quality comes when you not only listen to employees, but when you give them the tools, the training and empower them to make decisions to build quality products," said Boltz.
Of the plant's 2,800 hourly and salaried employees, more than 200 hourly workers arer?ectly involved in the production of the 2.0-liter engine. This all-new engine is built on a highly automated assembly line, which is expected to produce about 278,000 units in the first year.
Of the $1.3 billion investment costs to develop the Neon, $165 million was spent on the 2.0-liter engine.
 In addition to the 2.0-liter, Trenton manufactures 2.2/2.5-liter 4-cylinder, 3.3/3.8-liter V-6 and multi-valve 3.5-liter V-6 engines for Chrysler vehicles.
