CHRYSLER CORPORATION SUBSIDIARY VPSI STARTED ITS CLEAN AIR ACT IN 1977

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Sixteen years ago today, VPSI (a subsidiary of Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C)) began providing commuters a better way to travel to and from work each day. The better way is vanpooling.
What is a vanpool? A vanpool is a group of seven to 15 commuters who ride to and from work each day in a passenger van. Vanpooling is a bargain in comparison to driving alone. By sharing the cost of operating a passenger van with other commuters, riders save money. The longer the commute, the greater the savings. In addition, vanpooling helps reduce auto emissions and traffic congestion.
Chrysler Corporation, prompted by the success of its employee vanpool program, organized Van Pool Services, Inc. Since 1977, VPSI (as it is now called) has been helping commuters make the switch to vanpooling. Today, VPSI is the nation's largest provider of commuter vanpool services. Using its vehicles and financial resources, VPSI provides transportaion services to the nation's environmentally conscious commuters.
Jeff Henning, president of VPSI, stated: "Providing economically attractive transportaion alternatives to single occupant vehicle commuting is critical to improving our environment and reaching EPA Clean Air Attainment Standards. VPSI is committed to the expansion of the commuter vanpooling."
In 1993 alone, VPSI's fleet of nearly 3,900 commuter vans will accommodate a projected ridership of 24.3 million passenger-trips. With each vanpool placed into service an average of 10.5 cars are indirectly removed from the highways during rush hours. This statistic translates into an estimated 65,000 tons of carbon monoxide eliminated from the air. VPSI will enable vanpoolers to voluntarily save over 41 million gallons of gasoline this year alone (nearly 1 million barrels of foreign oil).
To serve VPSI's growing customer base, Customer Service Centers are located in the following cities:
 Los Angeles Chicago Detroit Boston
 Washington Houston Newark San Francisco
 Minneapolis Orlando Pittsburgh Dallas
 New Orleans Cincinnati Cleveland Stamford
 Richmond Atlanta Melbourne St. Louis
 Denver Austin Philadelphia
This year VPSI successfully introduced 40 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles into its vanpool fleet. Other clean fueled vehicle options are being explored.
