CHRYSLER CORPORATION ORDERS AND INSTALLS A CRAY Y-MP 8I SYSTEM
 Third Cray Research System Installed
By Chrysler In Past Four Years
EAGAN, Minn., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) has ordered and is installing a CRAY Y-MP 8I system this month at Chrysler's new Technology Center in Auburn Hills, Mich.
Chrysler's new CRAY Y-MP 8I, an upgrade from a CRAY Y-MP 2E supercomputer the company installed last year, will be used for general automotive applications including structural analysis and design, computational fluid dynamics, and crash simulation.
This is the third Cray Research (NASDAQ: CYR) system Chrysler has installed in the past four years. The CRAY Y-MP 8I system, announced in March, provides the power of the eight-processor CRAY Y-MP in a very cost-effective single cabinet; Cray Research has received five orders for the new system.
"As Chrysler's computational needs grow, we are pleased that our expanded product line is able to provide a seamless upgrade path," said John Rollwagen, Cray Research chairman and chief executive officer. Rollwagen said this acquisition during today's difficult economic times shows Chrysler's recognition that advanced computational tools are needed for the company's future growth.
"Acquiring a Cray Research system is a competitive advantage and an investment in the future," he said. "We are pleased to continue providing Chrysler with the computer tools that help the company compete in the worldwide auto industry."
According to Ron Bienkowski, executive engineer in Chrysler's technical computing center, "We have been pleased with the performance of our Cray computers and look forward to this new CRAY Y-MP 8I system, which will be used by Chrysler engineers in analyzing new vehicle platforms to meet corporate and customer requirements. This work would be next to impossible without the Cray."
Cray Research has 298 systems installed worldwide including 27 systems at automotive companies around the world.
Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
