CHRYSLER APRIL CAR SALES HIT FOUR-YEAR HIGH, TRUCKS ROLL ON AT RECORD-SETTING PACE

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- It was the best April in four years for Chrysler car sales, and another all-time record month for trucks. The company boosted total vehicle market share 2.3 points over April 1992 to an estimated 15.4 percent on total sales of 192,057 vehicles -- a 28 percent hike and the best April for total vehicle sales in five years.
Total car sales climbed by 38 percent over April 1992, to 76,248 units. It was the sixth consecutive monthly increase in car sales. Car market share rose by 2.5 points over April 1992 to an estimated 10.2 percent. Retail car sales increased by 47 percent over April 1992 to 57,618 -- also the best April in four years.
Chrysler trucks achieved the best total sales month in history with 115,809 units, topping the previous record of 109,482 set just last month. It was also the best retail truck sales month in history, at 99,911 units, and the 19th consecutive monthly increase in retail truck sales.
Chrysler minivans recorded the second best month ever, with sales of 51,978. The best month was January 1990 when the company sold 63,733 units during the first minivan rebate offer. Minivans have set record sales in 12 of the last 14 months, and also posted the 26th consecutive retail sales increase in April.
"Our vehicle retail sales for April, cars and trucks combined, were up 36 percent from a year ago to 157,529 units. That's the best April in five years, and the highest retail volume since August 1989," said Theodor R. Cunningham, Executive Vice President -- Sales and Marketing. "Last month I said our truck sales were amazing. Clearly, I spoke too soon. But what pleases me even more is our momentum in car sales. Along with the continued success of the new Dodge Intrepid, Chrysler Concorde and Eagle Vision, our Plymouth Sundance and Dodge Shadow also set April records in both total sales (15,238) and retail sales (13,476)."
Chrysler sold 7,900 Dodge Intrepids; 5,215 Chrysler Concordes; 2,275 Eagle Visions; and 767 Chrysler New Yorker and Chrysler LHS models, introduced in mid-April.
It was the best month ever for Jeep-Eagle, and the eighth consecutive monthly record. April sales of 40,564 units surpassed April 1992 by 55 percent. Eagle had its best April ever with sales of 7,190. Total Jeep sales of 33,374 also represented an increase of 55 percent, establishing the best month ever and the eighth consecutive monthly record.
Dodge Dakota set its 18th consecutive monthly record and best April ever on sales of 13,742, up 16 percent over April 1992. It was the 14th consecutive month in which Dakota sales exceeded 10,000 units.
