CHROMIUM 6 FUNDING SOUGHT GLENDALE HOPES TO CREATE SAFETY STANDARDS.

Byline: Helen Gao Staff Writer

GLENDALE - City officials are seeking state and federal grants to cover the estimated $12 million needed to develop and implement technology that could remove chromium chromium (krō`mēəm) [Gr.,=color], metallic chemical element; symbol Cr; at. no. 24; at. wt. 51.996; m.p. about 1,857°C;; b.p. 2,672°C;; sp. gr. about 7.2 at 20°C;; valence +2, +3, +6.  6 from Glendale's drinking water drinking water

To help secure the money, the City Council tonight will consider paying $30,000 to hire a consultant specializing in grant acquisitions.

``We feel federal and state funding support is warranted because we are doing original research work that other water agencies throughout the state can benefit from,'' Don Froelich, water services administrator, said Monday.

Froelich said the research undertaken by Glendale could be used by state and federal regulators to establish future standards for chromium 6, an industrial byproduct by·prod·uct or by-prod·uct

Currently, there are standards only for total chromium, but not for chromium 6, one of the components of the chemical.

City officials estimate that developing the technology for chromium 6 removal will cost $3 million and that building a new plant will cost $9 million. Research and construction are expected to take four to five years.

Froelich and his staff have already put together a proposal to seek $3 million in state funding. The Assembly appropriations subcommittee sub·com·mit·tee

At the same time, city officials are working closely with state Sen. Jack Scott, D-Pasadena, on a bill that would allocate $15 million to develop technology and demonstration facilities for chromium 6 removal throughout California.

The bill, SB 460, has been referred to the Committee on Environmental Quality, but no hearing date has been set.
