CHROMIUM 6 FOUND IN AREA WELLS LEAD, ARSENIC CONCENTRATIONS ALSO DETECTED AT SOME SITES, STUDY SAYS.

Byline: Staff and Wire Services

SANTA CLARITA - A county-ordered study of 220 privately-owned water wells found that 35 percent of them are contaminated with chromium 6, nearly half are tainted with arsenic, and lead was detected in 43 percent.

The well that drew the most concern in the Santa Clarita area was one south of Pyramid Lake that tested high for lead content, likely from piping or a faulty pump, Los Angeles County Health Services health services Managed care The benefits covered under a health contract  officials said.

The pump is on the grounds of a Camp Verdugo Oaks, run by the Boy Scouts of America Noun 1. Boy Scouts of America - a corporation that operates through a national council that charters local councils all over the United States; the purpose is character building and citizenship training  - but it was unclear whether the problem well served the camp or whether it was a neighboring well used by the U.S. Forest Service.

Terry Hall, director of the year-round Scout camp, said he was assured by county health officials that his pump passed water quality tests. Forest Service officials did not return calls.

Either way, the well will be retested.

``We probably have to go out and take another look and see if that's just a fluke, said Jack Petralia, director of environmental protection for the Health Services Department. ``There's certainly a possibility that it's a problem with the pump - somehow the pump or the metal casing for the well is giving off the lead.''
