CHRISTMAS SERVICES PLANNED THROUGHOUT SOUTHLAND.

Christmas celebrations will begin tonight as people across Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  and the world mark the birth of Jesus Christ Jesus Christ: see Jesus.

. The holiday, one of the holiest for Christians - second only to Easter - will be observed with candlelight services and midnight Masses throughout the area.

Local clergy are expecting big crowds.

``Packed,'' said Monsignor Padraic Loftus, ``because visitors come in with their families to witness the mystery of Christmas.''

Loftus will celebrate midnight Mass after Christmas carols A Christmas carol is a carol whose lyrics center on the theme of Christmas or that has become associated with the Christmas season even though its lyrics may not specifically refer to Christmas. Both types of Christmas carols are included in this list. , which will begin at 11 p.m., at St. Mel Catholic Church in Woodland Hills. The church also will celebrate a 5:30 p.m. children's service as well as a 9 p.m. Mass.

The church is located at 20870 Ventura Blvd.

Los Angeles Catholic leader, Cardinal Roger Mahony, will lead a Christmas Eve A Christmas Eve is a short story by Camillo Boito which appeared in his anthology of decadence and perversity titled Tales of Vanity (sometimes translated as Vain Tales), which also featured his more famous work, Senso.  Mass at 1:30 p.m. today at Challenger Memorial Youth Center, 5300 West Ave. I, in Lancaster.

At 10 a.m. Christmas Day, Mahony will offer the Mass of the Lord's Nativity in Spanish at St. Joseph Church, which is located at 12th and Los Angeles streets downtown. A Christmas message will be offered in English following his sermon.

Among Christmas services planned:

Midnight Mass candlelight service beginning at 11 p.m. at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church Evangelical Lutheran Church can refer to many different Lutheran churches in the world. Among them are the following:
  • Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
  • Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada
  • Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chile
, 1920 W. Glenoaks Blvd., Glendale.

Our Lady of Grace, 5011 White Oak Ave., Encino, will have Christmas Eve services at 5 p.m. and midnight.

Christian Church of the Hills, 5310 Derry Ave., Suite P, Agoura Hills, will have candlelight Christmas Eve services at 5:30 and 7 p.m.

Moorpark Presbyterian Church, 13950 Peach Hill Road, Moorpark, will feature a candlelight service at 9 p.m.

Christmas Eve service will be at 7:30 p.m. at Church of the Foothills, 13425 Glenoaks Blvd., Sylmar.
