CHRISTMAS OVER, THE SALES BEGIN.

``It'll be a hectic day,'' said C. Britt Beemer, chairman of America's Research Group. ``There was no real reason to shop early, so it leaves it up to the biggest deals to attract shoppers now. Retailers are desperate to get people in there.''

His polls indicate that 55 percent of people plan to give gift cards this year, further fueling the shopping traffic. With stores dangling markdowns of 50 percent and more, along with new post-Christmas merchandise to fill out shelves, consumers will likely spend heavily.

``I wouldn't be a bit surprised if savvy Hanukkah shoppers are waiting for the deals,'' said Cris Bremner, senior marketing manager for The Oaks in Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964.
