The task force is similar to the increased patrols dispatched during the CHP's maximum enforcement period over the Thanksgiving holiday last month, which netted 25 drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the Newhall station's jurisdiction, said CHP Officer Wendy Moore.

The second of three year-end maximum enforcement periods will run from 6 p.m. Wednesday until midnight Sunday, followed by a third operation beginning at 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve through Jan. 4.

The Newhall station made 18 DUI arrests during last year's Christmas enforcement period and nabbed another 22 during the New Year's patrols in 2002, Moore said.
