CHP VETERAN HONORED FOR HIS WAY WITH PEOPLE.

Byline: Stacy Brown Daily News Staff Writer

Andy Hernandez's motto is that you must give respect to receive it.

This week the 18-year California High Patrol veteran received a good measure of respect from his peers at the Newhall station.

Hernandez was feted with the Officer of the Year award at a ceremony in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  for his dedication, professionalism and the respect he gives and gets from others.

Like many in law enforcement, Hernandez said the most difficult part of the job is responding to incidents that involve fatalities, especially those of children.

``That's why I loved when I worked downtown, because I interacted with a lot of kids there,'' said Hernandez, 41, a single father to a 6-year-old.

The veteran officer said he's always gotten along well with his colleagues and the residents he serves.

``I have people thank me after I've ticketed them,'' Hernandez said. ``My philosophy has always been to talk to someone the way you want them to talk to you, and show respect.''

The officer has not only won the admiration of his comrades, but that of Capt. Pete Mader, who said Hernandez is a model officer.

``Andy is a guy who does outstanding work month after month and is always reliable,'' Mader said.

Hernandez was one of several officers who engineered the Freeway Service Patrol A freeway service patrol, alternatively known as a motorist assistance patrol, roadway service patrol, or a courtesy patrol, is the umbrella term for a variety of programs implemented by government agencies, typically state Highway Patrols or Departments of , a joint effort by Caltrans and the CHP CHP Chapter

to assist motorists in trouble during rush hour.

Mader said Hernandez promotes all that's good in law enforcement, and he is always ready to step in to assist a colleague.

Hernandez has lived in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  for three years and said there is no place better to live.

``I love this valley, it's so nice to have people wave at you using all their fingers,'' Hernandez said, and laughed.
