Capt. Bernard Deyo said the area where the truck spun off the road and down the embankment has been the site of other traffic mishaps, especially when it rains.

``The rain is always a contributing factor,'' Deyo said.

In the pileup at the Newhall Pass, a trucker who lost control of his vehicle and jackknifed was run into by another big rig, touching off the chain-reaction collision at about 4:40 a.m.

The crashes occurred in the same area where a 14-vehicle pileup took place one week earlier.

A CHP officer was fortunate to escape injury as one of the trucks ran over his squad car shortly after he exited to help clear traffic lanes.

``We want people to know that when it is raining, the road becomes slippery and everyone should adjust their speeds,'' Sweeney said.
