``Are you kidding? Play football against those guys,'' said Doug Sweeney, a member of the CHP team. ``Those guys are Super Bowl champs and Hall of Famers.''

The benefactor of the charity game will be the California Association of Highway Patrolmen's Widows and Orphans In typesetting, widow refers to the final line of a paragraph that falls at the top the following page of text, separated from the remainder of the paragraph on the previous page. The term can also be used to refer simply to an uncomfortably short (e.g.  Trust Fund, which benefits the families of fallen officers.

Carrie Prue of the CHP association, which represents more than 10,000 officers, said the fund was established in 1929 by officers who felt the need to help the families of their fallen comrades.

Immediate relief is given to families because oftentimes life insurance policies are slow in making payments, Prue said. The trust fund disperses a one-time $2,400 payment to the spouse or immediate family member of an officer within a couple of hours of notification.

Over the years, the trust has provided more than $3 million to relieve families.

When asked why the football greats were being challenged on the hardwood instead of doing battle on the grid iron, CHP Officer John Vickers said while the cops are generally in good shape, it wasn't a good idea. ``Those guys are 6 feet, 300 pounds,'' Vickers said.

``I won't make any predictions but it'll be a heck of a game,'' Sweeney said.

Tickets for the event, which is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., are $13.

Officials said because of the ex-football players' busy and ever changing schedule, originally scheduled heroes may get replaced by other legends.

However, Sweeney said all past Raiders and 49ers greats who have played in at least one of the teams' Super Bowl championship seasons have been invited to participate in the game.

He said hope is being held out that legendary quarterback Joe Montana can make a cameo appearance at the event. Montana, the 49ers Hall of Fame-bound quarterback and three-time league and Super Bowl most valuable player, has not yet notified organizers whether he will be available.
