The officer involved chased a black Pontiac Fiero that had failed to yield on Vineland Avenue. At one point, the driver of the Fiero stopped, and the officer got out of the patrol car. The driver put the car in reverse and tried to run down the officer, who fired several times, hitting the motorist in the chest.

The wounded man drove off but crashed his car at Moorpark Street and Lankershim Boulevard, where he was arrested.
