``Our goal is to improve conditions wherever we go and it seems like the Antelope Valley Freeway is one of the most problematic freeways in the county,'' Webb said.

Last month, officers issued 565 citations to speeders and other violators while responding to 37 collisions. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Capt. Pete Mader of the Newhall division said the team will operate out of the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  area over an undisclosed period of time. The number of tickets written Thursday was not available.

Officers on the team are specially trained to locate speeders. For instance, Mader said, if an officer is in the process of stopping one motorist he is trained to notice other speeders and alert the nearest stationed officer.

Mader said not only will the freeway be targeted but unincorporated areas such as Sierra Highway in the Vasquez Canyon area as well.

``We've been working the Antelope Valley Freeway a lot, but other areas are of concern, too,'' Mader said.

The CERT team was formed a year ago to reinforce to regular patrols. Because just one officer is taken from a division, no extra funding was required and stations are not left shorthanded, Mader said.

``We just want people to slow down,'' Webb said. ``We would rather see that happen and not give tickets than having to pull people over and write them up.''

The team's presence is rarely announced because Mader said it would take the surprise element out of the operation. ``We prefer to keep it quiet, we can't tell everything that we do,'' Mader said.
