And they could supply the proof that the Chinese invented pasta before the Italians. Lu Houyuan, a researcher with China's Institute of Geology and Geophysics in Beijing, said: "These are definitely the earliest noodles ever found." The noodles were buried 10ft deep in sediment of the Yellow River, in north-eastern China, after experts lifted out an upturned bowl. They believe the noodles were made by pulling dough into long strands before boiling. The noodles, up to 1ft 8in long, sat on a mound of silt which had sealed them in the bowl following a major earthquake and flood. Dr Houyan said: "The bowl was found in fine clay. When we lifted it off, the remains of the noodles were found on top of the cone of sediment that had filled the inverted earthenware container.
