CHITWOOD GIVES CSUN A FRESH START.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

Calvin Chitwood was in Phoenix for a few days of vacation, but that didn't mean a break from basketball.

Chitwood is averaging 9.9 points for the Matadors (2-6), who open conference play today with a home game against Cal State Fullerton.

``In high school, one of the things I learned was to get after it in practice,'' Chitwood said. ``If you do that, games are easier. I was shocked when I found that out in college.''

Freshmen don't usually command a lot of minutes unless they know the system and play defense. Chitwood has done both and provided another consistent scoring threat to go with with senior Ian Boylan, who leads the Matadors in scoring at 13.6 a game.

``Calvin's been huge - I can't even describe it,'' Braswell said. ``With Eto's knee problem, and him not being where he wants to be, having Calvin come in as a freshman and play with the confidence he's playing with and doing the things he's doing, it's been great.''

For all of Chitwood's success, CSUN is 2-6. The Matadors had respectable losses at Oklahoma (82-72) and Arizona State (67-66), but losses to Tennessee State and Lafayette weren't exactly ringing endorsements.

``It's just a record,'' Chitwood said. ``We're starting conference 0-0, so it's like we're starting over. There are games we should've won, and it's been a good learning process.''
