The Community Health Information Technology Alliance (CHITA) today announced the beginning of registration for the Secure Email Evaluation Discovery (SEED) project for the state of Washington, in cooperation with Zix Corporation Zix Corporation (NASDAQ: ZIXI) is an American company based in Dallas, Texas that provides email encryption to health care organizations, financial institutions and government agencies.  (ZixCorp(TM)) (Nasdaq:ZIXI), a global provider of secure e-messaging services. The SEED project is designed to determine the impact of adopting and using secure email in the health care industry, as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1996.

Participants of the project receive a complimentary one-year subscription to ZixMail(TM), an easy-to-use, send-to-anyone, desktop-level secure email service See Internet e-mail service. , provided by ZixCorp. This one-year service is being made available to all members of the Washington state health care community. Eligibility is conditioned upon participation in two 10-minute online surveys -- one at first use, the other after six months. Doctors and their staff members may receive up to five licenses, while payors, state health agencies and other organizations may receive up to 15 licenses. Project participants immediately have the capability to send secure email to other health care professionals in compliance with HIPAA privacy regulations for electronic transmission. Interested organizations with ties to the Washington state health care community may visit www.zixcorp.com/healthstudy for registration. Registration is available until Feb. 1, 2003.

Survey responses to the study will help assess information related to adoption and use by doctors, patients, hospitals, payors and other health care organizations. Issues being addressed by the survey include: the purpose of any secure communication by email, factors likely to increase overall usage or satisfaction, and any obstacles to adoption of secure email.
