CHIPCOM, ERICSSON AND IBM TEAM TO PROVIDE ATM ISDN PERSONAL CONFERENCING SOLUTION.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 6, 1995 -- Chipcom Corporation, Ericsson Business Networks AB and IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  Corporation today announced the intention to enter into a strategic relationship to introduce multimedia networking solutions to the business communications market. The three companies plan to combine their efforts in order to further develop today's LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  hubs and PBXs into a unified network infrastructure supporting voice, video and data.

The first cooperative product will result in a comprehensive ATM/ISDN Personal Conferencing Solution, targeted for introduction in 1996.

Personal conferencing is made up of a relatively new set of applications including desktop data and video conferencing See videoconferencing.

(communications) video conferencing - A discussion between two or more groups of people who are in different places but can see and hear each other using electronic communications.
. Business, health, research and educational organizations will all benefit from these applications. They will save time and money and increase their efficiency because business meetings, access to health specialists, interactive remote education, etc., are now possible regardless of location. The environment will benefit as well when traveling is replaced by conferencing and working from home.

Several technologies have already come together to make personal conferencing possible. Faster desktop computers and video processors can easily handle full motion video. Compression enhancements have reduced the amount of information used. Asynchronous Transfer Mode See ATM.

(communications) Asynchronous Transfer Mode - (ATM, or "fast packet") A method for the dynamic allocation of bandwidth using a fixed-size packet (called a cell).

Ericsson will provide isochronous Ethernet National Semiconductor's enhancement to Ethernet for handling real time voice and video. It adds 96 ISDN channels to standard 10 Mbps Ethernet and runs over the same Category 3 UTP that most 10Base-T networks use. Each ISDN B channel is 64 Kbps, providing a total bandwidth of 6.  desktop connectivity to ISDN and ATM. In the future, the partners may expand the set of cooperative products to include additional telecommunication functions. The three partners will offer the resulting products and support to their customers.

"This cooperative relationship, at the junction of data and telecommunication networking, will bring the best of both worlds to our customers, right on their ATM workstation," said Antoine Granatino, vice president of IBM campus networking. "This will allow customers, both large and small, who want to move to an ATM desktop and keep existing telecommunication services, the ability to use new high-bandwidth applications, like ATM/ISDN personal conferencing. We are really excited about the opportunity that this will provide for the next version of IBM s Person-to-Person desktop conferencing See videoconferencing and data conferencing.  software, which will be based on the IBM Lakes Collaborative Networking Architecture, with its multi-vendor platform capability."

Menachem Abraham, Chipcom's senior vice president, product development, and chief technical officer, "This three-company relationship builds on Chipcom's already strong and recently expanded strategic alliance with IBM, and is the next step in deepening and widening our existing reseller relationship with Ericsson. It will enable our customers to deploy new business applications by leveraging their upcoming investments in new, switched campus and remote infrastuctures, such as ATM and ISDN. The broad, complementary technology base of Ericsson, IBM and Chipcom will serve as an excellent foundation for the exciting product development activities ahead of us."

"The result of this partnership will help our respective customers to migrate their existing communications systems In telecommunication, a communications system is a collection of individual communications networks, transmission systems, relay stations, tributary stations, and data terminal equipment (DTE) usually capable of interconnection and interoperation to form an integrated whole.  towards a more effective communications infrastructure, supporting new personal conferencing applications as well as today s legacy voice and LAN traffic," said Lars Bowman, general manager and vice president of Ericsson Business Networks AB.

The three parties will strive for industry standardization of technologies that will further enhance the capabilities of universal (voice, data and video) network infrastructures, services and applications. They intend to initiate and/or support the activities of specific industry forums in this field and those of national and international standards committees.
